A Royal Birthday...When Otumfuo Turned 58

What is the outcome when Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II combines the ninth anniversary of his ascension to the Golden Stool with his 58th birthday celebration? A colourful durbar and a great feast of course!

So it was on Sunday, May 18, 2008. Otumfuo Osei Tutu put on a show befitting the status of the occupant of the Golden Stool to celebrate Akwasidae, an Akan festival, during which departed ancestors are offered mashed yam, the traditional food for such events.

The venue was the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace where Akwasidae was commemorated in splendour and opulence, with two special guests – His Majesty Ssabaija Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, Kabaka of Uganda and His Majesty Sir Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbibinedion, Esama of Edo State of Nigeria, in tow.

Known in private life as Barima Kwaku Duah, the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool was born on March 6, 1950. He was enstooled Asantehene on 26th April, 1999. Fondly referred to as King Solomon by his subjects for his wise counseling, Otumfuo Osei Tutu decided that combining his birthday celebration with activities marking the ninth anniversary of his enstoolment, would leave an indelible mark in his reign.

He invited the Kabaka of Buganda to be his guests. The Esama of Edo State decided to grace the occasion too.

The crowd started forming early. By 10 am, the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace was fully occupied. In the milling crowd were chiefs of the various divisions of Asante, Ministers of State and other Guests of Honour including representatives of the various political parties
