THE Outstanding Man 2008 (TOM), an entertainment reality show that seeks to give sophisticated, talented Ghanaian men a platform to showcase their talents while gaining national and international exposure, will soon be launched. TOM is open to all Ghanaian males, home and abroad, who meet the following requirements: medically fit; aged between 18 and 35, and have at least basic education (that is, BECE or its international equivalent) The competition will be traditionally held every year between the months of May & June and as such, this year’s event will be held from May 1 to June 30, 2008. Speaking to Journalists in Accra as a prelude to the launch, Matthew Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of Ultimate Ideas, organisers of the event, said ‘The Outstanding Man’ believes Ghanaian males should be economically empowered, politically-astute, spiritually-centered, and civic-minded. Contestants will wear professional attire that show they are business-oriented, get a chance to interact with judges on their personal achievements, goals, current events and issues that have affected them, and should be able to display creativity, uniqueness and personality. The programme will dedicate 250 hours of community service to reading programmes across the country at scheduled periods. This way, TOM seeks to give talented Ghanaian men a platform to impact their community while gaining national and international exposure. The CEO indicated that the upcoming event was informed by the need to equip those making entry into the productive capacity base in Ghana or abroad, with the relevant social skills and self-development orientation, to protect themselves against the hazards of the modern-day lifestyle of drugs and immorality so as to live meaningful lives worthy of emulation. Because the majority of men are sexually experimented by the time they turn 20, most young Ghanaians are at risk of infection; indeed, in 2002, more than five per cent of males aged between 18 and 35 were estimated to be HIV positive. "These, undoubtedly are very young men. On the other hand, the incidence accounts for about 61 per cent of the cumulative AIDS cases in Ghana", he maintained. To identify, develop, and promote national leaders within Ghanaian community among men between 18 to 35 years of age, the CEO indicated that this mission is served through intensive contestant development and by operating as the largest male pageant organi-sation in the world. "We intend to produce keen competition to prove that Ghanaian men aged 18 to 35 when given the opportunity to grow socially, emotionally, physically and professionally can build a strong and effective foundation for ultimate development of themselves and their nation", he emphasised. |
