Volta Region Picks A Portrait
By Our Reporter
Friday, 25 April 2008

News is that the Volta Region has voted. The region’s opinion leaders, made up of the influential members and institutions of the region, have selected Mama Atrato II, a.k.a Josephine Dzah, as the region’s Portrait of an Excellent Woman.

Mama Atrato II was born on April 1, 1949 at Ho Dome.

She is an only child of her mother who vowed that Atrato must receive an education.

After her basic education at Ho Dome, she went to Ho Kpodzi Middle School, proceeded to Adonten Secondary School in Aburi and completed at Kedjebi Secondary School.

In 1970, she joined the Ghana Police Service for the love for the uniform, and was trained at the National Police Academy, Tesano, Accra.

After three years of hard work and dedication, Mama was posted to the BNI (then Special Branch) headquarters in Accra where she took a series of courses and passed through the ranks.

In 1998, she passed the United Nations Examination and joined the Ghana Police Service to Bosnia Herzegovia for peace keeping operations. In Bosnia, Mama studied International Human Rights and was awarded a United Nations Certificate on Human Rights.

She was then appointed the Human Rights Officer for Tuzzla Regions for six months where she performed to the admiration of both Serbians and Muslims.

On her return from Bosnia, Mama Atrato II purposed in her heart to give her community the benefit of her experience and knowledge. She thus embarked on a programme of rendering social services to her community, especially to women and young people.

In her community today, she organises women to learn soap making and fish processing to improve family incomes. Mama also assists many women to manage their petty trades and helps them access loan facilities to expand their business.

One such business is "LEBTEY PEPPER SAUCE". This business now provides employment to many young people in Ho and beyond.

She is a motivational speaker, counsellor and mentor. As a result, she has chaired many community functions. It was during one such function on "The Role of Christian Queen Mothers" that Mama requested for Medical Theatre Equipment from some foreign investors. She later donated the GH¢ 25 million theatre equipment to the Ho Regional Hospital.

In her zeal to ensure superior literacy among local students, she has donated many books which she acquired on a visit to Finland to Ho-Dome Primary school and Ho Polytechnic. When drug addicts began to encroach on the compound of Ho-dome Primary School, a situation which worried the whole community, Mama organised and paid to fence the school. Thus was the problem eliminated.

She continues to sponsor brilliant needy young girls through secondary education in Mawuko Girls and OLA Girls High School.

Even though she is resident in Accra, she is a member of the Bible class of Dela Chapel at Kpodzi, where she fellowships whenever she is in Ho.

She has formed youth groups called "Loving Sisters of Ho" and a dancing group which, among other activities, identify the aged who have no children and render social services to them. They undertake clean-up exercises and provide mats and mattresses to those found sleeping on bare floor. They also make significant presentations to the children ward of the Ho Municipal Hospital. Mama also solicits for second-hand clothes from cities and shares them among the needy.

As her contribution to facilitating the provision of justice, Mama Atrato II donated plastic chairs to WAJU, and also to the National Security Service headoffice in Ho. She also financed the painting of the headquarters of the National Security Service.

She also organises public programmes on adolescent reproductive health and family planning for young adults, and encourages young women to space childbearing to better manage their health as well as that of the children.

She is now the ambassador of diabetes in the community and is currently seeking funding to extend her educational campaign on diabetes. She is particularly concerned about the market women who close late and therefore eat late with their children.

Currently, Mama is the Deputy Chairperson of the Regional Consultative Body of NCCE in the Volta Region and a board member of Ho-Nursing Training College.

As the region’s "Portrait of an Excellent Woman", she was unanimously selected from a list of nominees by representatives from the Traditional Council, youth and women’s groups, Christian Council, as well as the Chief Imam of the Volta Region in a round table deliberation.

Shear Power Ventures congratulates Mama Atrato II for her selection as Portrait of the Volta Region, and praises her for her good works.

The Portrait targets women aged 50+ who are resident in Ghana.

The event will not run along the traditional beauty pageant format. The possession and demonstration of four (4) cardinal pillars of beauty are fundamental indicators for election of participants/contestants. The four pillars are:

Duty

Sacrifice

Integrity

Approachability.
